Many people seem to plan for a new baby like they’re getting ready for a mountaineering expedition to Mount Everest. They spend an enormous amount of money and pick up lots of stuff that they don’t need. The fact is, you don’t need everything, and you honestly don’t need most things when it comes to prepping for a new baby.
Read on for more essentials of baby care products.
- Babies are tiny, and their fingernails and toenails are nearly microscopic. When you’re trimming nails, instead of a nail clipper or scissors, an emory board will make the job much easier.
- It can be tough to check the temperature of a squirming or cranky baby. Save yourself time with an ear thermometer, and you can check your baby’s temp when they’re down for a nap.
- Most parents, after their kids grow, will do virtually anything to get rid of outdated baby supplies. Strollers, diaper bags, swings, baby carriers/slings, activity centers, and books are all items that you have no need to buy new. Lots of people list these items on sites like Craigslist for sale. Friends and family most likely have items they’re willing to part with, and they may even let you try them out ahead of time to see if you like it.
- If you’re planning on having multiple children, try to get baby accessories that are gender neutral. While your baby won’t care about color one way or the other, you might feel a little weird putting your baby boy into a hot pink stroller.
- Finally, be willing to be flexible. One baby may love an activity center, while your second baby wants nothing to do with it. Babies are not an exact science, and sometimes a little trial and error is what it takes.

One of the recurring themes we hear from stylists (and even owners on a regular basis), is “I don’t like to sell”. Here are some real truths: every service organization is selling something– either products, services or the people who give it. If a client comes back to see a stylist a second time, it’s because the stylist has sold their service value. That’s selling! So guess what: we are in the business of selling. The sale makes the customer. It took me a minute to get it, but here’s what it means: we often think that it is the customer that makes the sale, but if you change it around and look at it in a different light, you start to realize that the point of sale can be the pivot point in creating a long-time customer. As an example, Catherine and I were out shopping the other day in a store we hadn’t frequented before. We weren’t offered any help on the floor, but finally found what we were looking for and proceeded to check out. We weren’t given any love there, either! Our discussion on leaving was, “Well, they didn’t make a customer there!” That idea of “the sale makes the customer” came back to me and I finally got it. If that store had given us the feeling that our attendance was appreciated and our business was worth something, that store could have made long-time customers out of us. So, let’s think about what goes into the sale. Of course, the most important aspect of a sale is to have a customer! That means prospecting or finding the customers to frequent our business. Once we have a prospective customer, we offer to sell them something; in our industry, of course, we are offering time slots for services, and take home products for maintenance. This is often where we, as an industry, fall down on the job. We leave all the decisions to the customer. We let them direct our business because we don’t help them in the decision making process. What makes a successful business is a returning client. They don’t come back unless you ask them! They don’t buy anything unless you ask them! Most of us are not trained to sell. Selling isn’t a skill that you are born with; it is a skill that you develop. Make no mistake, every business that you and your employees will work for, will be sales organizations. You are either selling products, services, or your own personality. In our industry, the products and services we sell to our clients enrich their lives. We are their beauty experts. We ensure that their hair, fashion, scalp-health, skin care is up-to-date and increases their sense of wellness. We ENRICH their lives! Let’s change our attitude towards presenting our products and services to our clients and ENRICH their lives with our talents and products. Let’s break down ENRICHING into something easy and manageable. Here’s Enrichment 101 in a nutshell! Let’s ASSUME every client or customer wants what we have to offer and offer it to them. Let’s word our offer in such a way that it ends up guiding our client in the decision making process. To do that we simply offer them ALTERNATIVES until we have satisfied their needs. Here are a couple of examples: “Mary, you will notice re-growth from your colour in about four to six weeks. Let’s book your next appointment in that time frame so that your colour stays fresh. What works best for you: the beginning or the end of the week? Morning or afternoon? Which time works best for you, 9:00 or 11:00? “ “Mary, the colour care shampoo we talked about to hold your colour investment is available in either an 8.5 ounce size or a liter size. Which works best for you? It sounds simple, yet stylists and front-end staff often struggle with these simple techniques. The best way to overcome this objection is to create some simple scripts for employees to use and you can create your own, like the samples above. Then make sure that every staff member has a copy. The consistency of dialogue is very important. After a day or two of scripted dialogue, the conversation becomes your own! Let’s face it; you can be the greatest technician in the world, but if you don’t have a client in your chair, are you still a stylist? We need clients to be stylists! To get clients, we have to sell our services. So, let’s get out there and practice!

It’s usually harmless and easily fixed, but dry skin can sometimes be a clue that you have an underlying health issue. If your skin stays dry no matter what you do, or your dry skin is also itchy or uncomfortable, it is time to take a closer look. Each of the following conditions can impact your skin, leaving it overly dry and uncomfortable. Diabetes Diabetes can wreak havoc on your skin; soaring blood sugar levels can lead to dehydration – and dry skin. According to the American Diabetes Association, even pre-diabetes could result in dry and uncomfortable skin that is more prone to infection. Every person with dry skin doesn’t have diabetes, but it is worth getting checked out if you have other risk factors. Thyroid Trouble For women over thirty, some dry skin issues can be linked to hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland stops performing as it should. If you feel tired easily or feel cold all the time, your thyroid could be to blame. Along with the fatigue and constant chill, people who have an underactive thyroid can also suffer from patchy, dry, scaly skin, according to a recent article in the medical journal Dermato Endocrinology. Kidney Issues Many of the 26 million adults who have kidney issues don’t even realize that they are suffering from an ailment until they are diagnosed. The tiredness, increased urination and bloating that are caused by kidney disease are often misinterpreted as colds, illness or even premenstrual issues. Kidney issues may have only subtle signs, but dry skin is one of them; if you have a family history of kidney disease or are being treated for high blood pressure, then your dry skin could be linked to your kidneys. Skin Cancer Not every patch of dry skin is dangerous, by dry, scaly patches the bleed or won’t go away could be a sign of squamous cell carcinoma. This common form of cancer may look like a dry patch with elevated edges, a wart or even an open sore; any dry patch with this type of appearance should be checked by a doctor right away. Not every patch of dry skin is a cause for alarm, but understanding the connection between your skin and other underlying health issues can improve your overall wellness and ensure you always look and feel your best. Get any suspect spot checked by your doctor and you’ll get the peace of mind that comes from knowing all is well.

Nobody really teaches you how to be a parent. There are no comprehensive classes telling you which baby care products you should have on hand. During the last couple of days, we’ve been offering a few tips for the essentials, the stuff you need, the stuff you don’t need, and a few ways to save a few bucks.
Read on for more necessities for newborns.
- To get prepared for bottle and formula feeding, buy a bottle starter kit. They usually include 6-8 four ounce bottles with nippes, 6 8 ounce bottles with nipples, a washable bottle brush, and a small assortment of bibs. You can buy these separately, but you’ll end up paying a lot more.
- If you’re planning on breastfeeding, pick up a few bibs, breast pads, which can be found in reusable or disposable styles, and breast pump and milk storage containers. A nursing pillow can make things more comfortable, but do your research and try to find a decent used pillow first.
- You would think sleeping arrangements would be fairly straightforward, but there are a dizzying array of choices. First, consider a Pack N’ Play with a changer and bassinet. This will take care of your baby for the first month or so. Pick a stable and decent crib with a mattress, a couple of mattress covers, and 2 sets of fitted sheets. A swaddle blanket or baby sleeping bag can make life a little easier.
- For safety reasons, never buy a used infant car seat. Buy new and do your research to find a brand and style you like. A parenting pro tip: if you’re not sure how to correctly install the infant car seat, just head over to your local police department. Officers are usually happy to install it correctly, and pass along some helpful safety information.

You head to the gym to get healthy, but if you are not taking the proper precautions against germs, parasites and even fungi, you could end up sick. Here are 4 surefire ways to get ill or injured at the gym. 1. Not Investing in your Own Equipment Sure, the gym tries to keep up, but you have no way of knowing who used that communal yoga mat yet, and you’re about to place your hands all over it. Cold and flu germs can survive on plenty of gym surfaces, from yoga mats to the handles of your favorite pieces of equipment and even the water fountain. Bypass your own basic supplies and you could pick up a cold, the flu or worse. 2. Skipping the Shower Shoes A simple pair of slide on shoes or flipflops can do more than keep you from slipping and injuring yourself, they can keep you from catching a nasty fungus too. Even if you skip the shower, the fungi that causes athlete’s foot could be lurking on the floor, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. 3. Not Fueling Up Before or After You may be heading there to lose weight, but failing to eat something healthy before you go and after you are done could make you feel tired and unwell. You’ll be burning though calories and expending energy – and the goal of heading to the gym is to feel better, not worse. Water is essential as well; skip hydrating and you could wake up on the (germ covered) gym floor after an episode of dizziness. 4. Not Wiping Down the Entire Machine Before and After Using It You may take a swipe at the seat (good) or even wipe down the handles (better) but if you’re neglecting the headrest of that piece of equipment, you could come away with more than buff abs. Lice are a dirty little gym secret that no one wants to talk about, but that can be transmitted at the gym. Wipe down everything – and be safe rather than sorry. Making an investment in your own equipment and taking care to wipe down machines (including the head rest) before you use them can considerably cut your risk of becoming ill. You’re heading to the gym to get healthy, so these simple precautions ensure you don’t end off feeling worse than you did before you went to the gym.

Just as a solid, well-constructed foundation is crucial to the longevity of any building, your skin and its health are crucial when it comes to your overall appearance and beauty. This doesn’t always mean; however, that you have to depend on products in order to achieve healthy skin. There are other ways in which you can transform your skin, bringing out its natural glow and vitality, all without the use of products and they are as follows: 1. Protect Your Skin From The Sun According to a dermatologist at Eastside Dermatology in Columbus, Ohio, the number one way to improve your skin is by keeping it out of the sun. When you’re out and about, wear a large hat or use an umbrella if you have to be in the sun. If you can, choose the shade instead. Don’t forget the importance of applying sunscreen! Finish your look with a big pair of fashion-forward sunglasses. 2. Ensure You Get Enough Sleep The adage “getting your beauty sleep” is actually based on fact. Not only will a sleep deficit lead to all kinds of negative characteristics, such as weight gain, your skin won’t look its best either. Your skin will look brighter and younger and you will reduce the presence of those dark circles and pesky bags that take up residence under your eyes when you begin to make sleep a priority. You might be wondering if in fact you are getting enough sleep at the present time. According to the National Sleep Foundation, if you are between the ages of 24 and 64 years-of-age, you should be getting between seven and nine hours of sleep at night as a general rule. If you are regularly under that, you need to make sleep a priority. 3. Drink Enough Water To imagine what happens to your skin, think of the way a grape looks when it gets dehydrated. Yep, like a wrinkly raisin. Okay, perhaps, your skin won’t look that bad just because you don’t drink enough water. It won’t look its best, though. That’s for sure. Therefore, another way to keep your skin looking youthful, smooth and clear, is to make sure you’re drinking enough water. The Institute of Medicine states that men should drink 13 cups of liquid and women should partake of nine cups of liquid on a daily basis. This is an average, though, so an increased activity level means you need more liquid. By following the tips listed above, you can successfully improve your skin’s appearance all without the need of products.

Fall fashion colors are always those rich tones that bring out the golden and brown hues of our summer-kissed skin. Fall is the time for crisp weather and beautiful leaves, and the fall palette reflects that each year. After analyzing the New York and London Fashion Weeks, PANTONE released a report for the trending colors of Fall 2017. The PANTONE colors from New York Fashion Week included: Grenadine: A wonderfully bright shade of a leafy red-orange. Tawny Port: A rich burgundy hue. Ballet Slipper: A light, feminine hue on the slightly cooler side of pink. Butterum: A tawny, balanced swatch of tan. Navy Peony: The navy blue of the sky in autumn twilight. Red has been a very trending color for this fall season’s shoe and accessory lines among top designers. Each of these colors play nicely with the others to create a fantastical fall wardrobe that is warm and inviting. Some of the other noted colors included cooler hues of blues and greens, a neutral gray and a very cliché fall orange pick of Autumn Maple (the color of a ripe pumpkin). Mixing these colors in patterns, layers and accessory splashes will provide the look that is modern and elegant for this upcoming season. The PANTONE colors from London Fashion Week for Fall 2017 lines included: Flame Scarlet: A stunning hue of pure red that might be found in a Cardinal or ripe pie cherry Primrose Pink: A very close pink hue to Ballet Slipper with just a hint more warmth. Toast: Close to Butterrum, but more fleshy and slightly cooler. Blue Bell: A midday sky blue on a warm but blustery day with just a tinge of violet. Royal Lilac: A balanced shade of purple. Other colors included were warm shades of tan and yellows with the same Navy Peony that was chosen to represent popular colors in NY lines for Fall 2017. From these two pallets combined, it is clear that red, navy, medium tan and light pink are going to be popular colors in many lines. Florals remain popular, including several selections from these popular colors and layered ruffles in solid hues are another big trend. What will you be adding this season to really make your wardrob pop?

Did you know that selecting the appropriate shoe for your workout can make a major difference in performance, comfort, and preventing injuries? That’s right. When shopping for workout shoes, one sneaker doesn’t fit all. Choosing the wrong shoe can lead to shin splints, back pain, knee pain, and even numbness in your feet, according to podiatrists (i.e. foot doctors). Here’s what you should look for based on your workout preferences: Running If you’re lacing up your sneakers for a run, be sure they have built-in stability, cushion, and motion control—but in the right areas. When you run, the ball of your foot strikes the ground first. This requires more cushion in this area to absorb shock and prevent injuries. Look for light-weight running-specific shoes that have stiffer heels and appropriate arch support. Getting a gait analysis from a fitness expert can help you select the best shoe for you. Cycling Depending on your choice of cycling surface—trail, road, or spinning—you’ll require a different shoe. The best shoes for cycling have moderate to hard soles that allow your feet to remain on the pedals. These shoes should also be breathable and decrease any strain on the balls of the feet. Hiking Hiking shoes require heavily-treaded outsoles with good support and stability to prevent falls on rugged terrain. These shoes often have stiff, wider toe boxes that protect toes from impact against rocks. Hiking shoes should also be mid to high-cut in breathable and waterproof materials. Cross-Training Shoes for weight-lifting typically have thin soles (think Converse) and flat bottoms. However, if you are strength-training in addition to performing other causal sports, a good cross-trainer may be appropriate as well. These provide decent cushion and stability for activities like aerobics, basketball, and light jogging. Selecting the correct type of shoes is important, but so is choosing the correct fit. Overall, you’re searching for the right comfort level and optimal performance based on your chosen activity. Make sure the next time you purchase workout shoes you speak with a trained fitness professional who can guide you in making the right choice.

Welcome back! If you’re preparing for the birth of your baby, odds are you have questions. You might be making plans regarding which newborn baby products you’ll need. The thing is, many first time parents over prepare, and they end up with far more stuff than they actually need. Don’t worry about it, that’s what we’re here for.
Keep reading for more of the essentials you’ll need for your newborn.
- Bath time doesn’t have to turn into a huge production. To save money, buy a used plastic infant tub. If you want to be even thriftier, bathe your newborn in the sink, or take baths together.
- Parenting veterans will shudder uncontrollably when you say the word “diapers.” Not because they can be gross (They can), but because they can be expensive. As a new parent, don’t make the same mistake. If you opt for washable cloth diapers over disposables, with one child alone you’ll save a whopping $1700. Plus, if you’re environmentally conscious, you won’t have to worry about pounds of dirty diapers ending up in a landfill.
- Along similar lines, don’t throw away your money with disposable wipes. Use washcloths or cloth nappies. Organic coconut oil is also safe for babies, safe for cloth diapers, and great for handling diaper rash.
- Whatever kind of diapers you opt for, don’t load up on newborn sizes. Babies grow fast, so be sure to just buy what you need.
- Should you buy a changing table. Well...we’ll put it this way, it’s not essential. Instead, buy a Pack N’ Play and do your changing business on top of a dresser or table.

There are unwritten etiquette rules about virtually every life situation and your visit to your favorite salon is no different. To ensure you become a valued customer, whom your stylist looks forward to seeing, make sure you keep the following unwritten rules you should know about your next visit to the salon. Yes, You Should Tip According to Elie Camoro, a high-end stylist at Frederic Fekkai and Tahnee Seiler, who is a student services coach at the Aveda Institute, of course, you should always tip. This is a no-brainer. However, determining what percentage you should tip along with whether or not you should tip other people in the salon, like the person who shampoos you if that is different than your stylist, can be a bit confusing. In bigger cities, the trend is to tip more than 20%, while small town salons say that 15% is pretty common. If you have an added complication, like you bring along a small child and therefore, your stylist has to stop frequently throughout your visit, make sure your tip is a higher percentage. Also, if you have another person performing a specific service during your visit, like your shampoo, these experts say you should tip them separately from your stylist. A good rule of thumb is to tip between $3 and $5 for a shampoo. Be on Time!!! There is likely no other salon visit faux pas that will aggravate a stylist, and subsequently a salon, more than a client being late to their appointment. This is because stylists have their day set up like a well-organized jenga tower. If you are late, this will either cause your stylist to have to skip their break or prevent them from eating lunch or will throw the rest of their day off kilter. Be respectful of their time. Be on time. Even be a bit early. Of course, life happens. You get sick, the sitter cancels, things happen and your salon and stylist understands this. Just ensure being late or canceling without at least 24 hours before your appointment doesn’t become routine. There are other rules to remember when visiting a salon like it’s okay not to make small talk during your visit if you just want to veg. Also, stay off of your phone when possible, stylists need you to keep your head up so they can properly cut and style your hair. Not to mention the fact that it’s rude to stay on your phone throughout your appointment. Remember these rules and you are well on your way to becoming your stylist’s favorite client.

Waist trainers are to the modern woman what corsets were to older generations. The fact that they work is indisputable. You’ve only to look at celebrities like Khloe Kardashian to see how impressive the results can be. Waist trainers (and corsets) work by constraining the waist, which makes it both impossible to overeat and enhances the sensation of being bound. The “bound sensation” is what women in the past did not enjoy about corsets. But the resulting narrow waist has never been a complaint. Are Waist Trainers Safe? Waist trainers do carry inherent risks. If worn over a long period of time, and with sufficient tightening, a waist trainer can actually displace internal organs. Think of it. Some of your organs are in the waist area. If you squeeze them out, they have to go someplace. This organ displacement can lead to issues with digestion or even lead to internal bleeding. Obviously, this isn’t a risk that is worth having a smaller waist. When Using a Waist Trainer Makes Sense There are situations when using a waist trainer makes sense. If you have trouble controlling your appetite, and thus are heavier than you’d like to be. A waist trainer can help. Likewise if you don’t have a waist to speak of. A lot of women just don’t have an hourglass figure. If your shape is more straight up and down and less shapely, then it might make sense to try using a waist trainer and see if you like the results. What to Avoid When Wearing a Waist Trainer Now, a waist trainer can potentially help with your weight and shape goals. Some women even note that wearing a waist trainer gives them body confidence and hope, so they feel more empowered to reach their fitness goals. But first, here are some ways not to use a waist trainer: Never go to sleep wearing a waist trainer Don’t do heavy exercise wearing a waist trainer Never wear a waist trainer while breastfeeding or while pregnant Don’t wear a waist trainer longer than eight hours Waist trainers can be a good idea as long as you don’t use them incorrectly. Be sure to check with your general practitioner before embarking on a waist training regimen, especially if you have any existing medical issues.

It isn’t just the hair on top of your head that thins as you age. Your eyebrows can also start to thin out as time marches on. Thinning brows can make you look older, since young women usually don’t have the same issue. Not only that, but thinning eyebrows can dramatically alter the overall appearance of your face. Do you long for the lush eyebrows of your youth? Here are several eyebrow fixes for thinning brows. Rogaine Some anecdotal evidence supports claims that Rogaine can help with thinning brows. Rogaine contains minoxidil, an antihypertensive vasodilator medication used to treat hair loss. Although the manufacturer only provides instruction on applying Rogaine to the scalp, it’s possible that Rogaine might be effective with the hair growth of eyebrows, too. However, since the eyebrows are so close to your eyes, it’s recommended that you seek a professional if you want to try this kind of treatment. Cosmetic Tattoos If your eyebrows still have some hair, but are severely thin, you might consider cosmetic tattoos like microblading. Treatments like microblading are not as permanent as you might think, so over time you may have the procedure done again. More permanent solutions are available if you’re committed to never changing your brow style. Your spa esthetician will be able to perform this procedure in as little as an hour or two. The result will be something that can barely be noticeable from your natural brows. Stencils and Powder For a temporary solution to thinning brows, consider carefully applied brow powder used with a stencil. This technique is time consuming until you get the hang of it. After that, it could easily become part of your daily beauty routine. For best results, have your spa esthetician do this the first few times for you so you can learn how to get the most realistic shape and color. This is also a great way to experiment with different brow looks for drama and beauty. Wunderbrow Eyebrow Gel Wunderbrow is a gel formulation that contains synthetic fibers that mimic authentic eyebrow hair. It’s applied with a mascara-like wand. The product is waterproof and smudgeproof, so it will last all day and possibly even longer. It comes in five shades, so you can get exactly the look you desire. It can even be used to darken or lighten your natural brow color if you want. The good news is that you’ve got lots of options when it comes to filling out thinning brows. One of the above options is sure to give you great results.

A great spa can definitely jump start your fitness routine by way of inspiration and instruction. But, people who regularly work out at home often wonder how they can make it feel like a vacation, without neglecting their fitness goals? After all, no matter how breathtaking the spa’s surroundings may be, it’s hard to tear yourself away from the massage tables if the prime fitness draw is just a heightened version of the sport or workout you do at home. The trick is to look for a spa that offers exercise options in stark contrast to your home routine. Swap Your Fitbit for Qigong If you normally have your workout plotted to the last footstep and precise pulse rate, a spa fitness program requiring you to get out of your head may be in order. Look for programs which blend Western comfort with Eastern teachings. Meditation and breathing practices, such as qigong, can open your mind — as well as improve workout performance. And in terms of really putting your body through its paces, check out spiral dancing workshops, or classes in unfamiliar types of yoga. Trade Hills for Waves Are you a rugged hiker on the weekends? Climbing mountains is undeniably a great all-body workout, but you’ll activate new groups of muscles, and open your mind in new ways, by opting for a seaside spa. Choose one that not only has an accessible beach for swimming and walking on the sand, but also offers canoeing the marshes, or kayaking the waves, as part of the included amenities. Go from State-of-the-Art to Down-Home If you spend most of your workout time in a high-tech gym with all the latest weight machines and cardio contraptions, it can feel good to get back to basics again. Look for a “boot camp” or “sports camp” spa package that focuses on back-to-basics drills with kettlebells and jump ropes, as well as old-fashioned pushups and crunches. This no-nonsense approach will likely be coupled with less structured but still active group sessions, such as line dancing, or ball games. You’ll soon get your heart pumping and your sense of fun reignited, all at the same time!

Just got back from a selling trip in another city; and it looks like the same issues exist in every city! We came up against one of our major complaints at least SIX times over the last week – service providers that are DISCOUNTING their services! The unfortunate truth: stylists only do it, because the salon owner allowed it to happen. We cannot understand how a service provider can charge their clients a lower price than the one offered on the menu! As a salon owner/business person, you establish your pricing based on what you need to bring in to the salon to meet your rent, salaries/commissions, and expenses. It’s actually stealing from the salon owner to charge less than the prices stated by the owner! Yet, salon owners complain about this happening over and over again. Because we actually touch people, service providers often feel close to the client and think of them as friends and therefore want to offer them gifts like lower prices. This also happens when the service provider themselves feel they are not worth the price being charged or make unnecessary assumptions that their clients can’t afford their services. The most upsetting thing for these Two Blondes is the complaining that salon/spa owners do when this happens. If you have discounting happening in your business, go and look in the mirror for the real culprit! Imagine this scenario: you need $30,000 per month to break even with your expenses. You set your prices accordingly, market your business, book your employees and BANG! Johnny Angel decides that $60 haircut is too much for his clients to pay and only charges them $45. He still gets his 50% commission of $22.50 but the business has been screwed out of the necessary amount they need to cover the cost of the service. If you are like the majority of business owners, you are probably not making much profit and that discount Johnny just offered just cost you 8% of the sale!! PUT IT IN YOUR POLICY MANUAL! If a stylist is discounting due to lack of faith in their abilities, consider putting the stylist back to a level where they feel more comfortable. The solution is really quite simple. When you hire a new employee, make sure that they understand all of the policies in your manual. Go over this particular one until you are sure they understand the implications. Let the stylist eat the discount. If you discover that a service provider is discounting, take the discount from the service provider’s portion of the service. In other words, if a service is $50 and the client is only charged $40, the lost $10 should come out of the service provider’s portion. For example, if you are paying a 50% commission, then the salon still receives its $25 and the service provider receives $15. Johnny Angel, for example would only receive $15 for the service he performed instead of the $30 he should have earned if charged correctly or the $22.50 he would have received for discounting. Number One lesson here? As the owner, you have the right to determine the policies and procedures you want in place to operate your business efficiently. Do it! Policies are the foundation that every business, that’s EVERY business, from the largest corporation to a small enterprise, must have to determine how they want their business managed and developed.

Thank you Ellio’s Pizza for sponsoring this post. Visit your local retailer to pick up your own Ellio’s Pizza for a pizza night in! Every back-to-school season is filled with changes in the air, no matter what stage you are in life. Not only is this year no exception, but it’s a bit of a doozy! Ok, it’s a major doozy. This is my year of two kids in the same school for the first time! Scarlet is in third grade which seems like SUCH a big grade to me. She no longer talks about pink princesses all of the time. Instead, she often has her nose in a book, or is talking about animals, running, or how much she likes school. Des started kindergarten only weeks ago and I’m still not sure how he likes it – he does look forward to going back every morning. He’s getting so big suddenly! I remember the toddler years too clearly. Sometimes they get in the car and Scarlet is bubbling over with vivid stories about her day, while Des is more silent. Occasionally, it’s the reverse. I know they’re young but I sometimes feel like that closeness is fading away. From … Continue reading

There are hundreds of newborn baby products, a vast array of things that the manufacturers claim you absolutely must buy for your baby. We’re told as new parents we need all this stuff to raise a healthy child. But the truth is, for thousands of years parents had babies and got by perfectly fine without owning a locally made wipes warmer.
Keep reading for a few products that, honestly, you don’t really need.
- You know how we mentioned wipes warmers? Take a moment and think, what precisely do they do? Really, they just keep a cold wipe from touching your baby’s rear end. If that’s a concern to you, just warm up a washcloth in warm water.
- Some parents will become enchanted by a crib set they see while shopping for a crib. These sets usually cost upwards of $100 and include a comforter, bumper pads, sheets, some pillows, a dust ruffle, a mobile, and perhaps some curtains. Problem is, there’s a risk of suffocation with bumper pads, pillows, loose blankets and quilts. All you really need are single fitted sheets, a few waterproof mattress pads in case of accidents, and a dust ruffle to tie the whole thing together.
- Bassinets can be fun and great looking. However, they’re also an almost complete waste of money. Why? The main problem is that their weight limit is pretty low, and babies pack on the pounds quickly. A smarter buy is a Pack N’ Play, which have enormous versatility. You can use them at home, bring them along for trips, and they can keep your baby entertained if you’re busy. For those of us who are prepping for an infant and are on a budget, it’s a no-brainer.

The middle of the body is typically a source of frustration and focus for many women. The torso often picks up excess fat quickly and a kind of pouch begins to appear that many battle. The “mommy pouch” is best known among women who have carried their babies to term and stretched the skin and muscles in that region. While some choose to wear stretched skin and flab as beautiful marks of life’s greatest adventure, others are bothered by it. It is the constant bane that countless blogs and exercise programs have attempted to solve. What if the approach is wrong? While most programs encourage crunches and special fat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, carb-free or sugar-free diets, many fail to address the underlying problem. The ab muscles have actually started to separate in a condition called diastasis recti within the medical world. And a study from Norway found that a third of moms had this condition after giving birth. This condition can lead to not only an unflattering tummy that makes clothes fit poorly, but it also frequently leads to lower back pain. Occasionally, the abdomen tissue can also be torn from this condition, which may lead to a hernia. And, it is actually worsened by crunches that splay the muscles further apart. Dia Method, the MuTu System and the Tupler Technique Instead, a new approach to a fast and effective kind of exercise is being explored that allows the abdomen muscles to realign and reduces the pouch around the tummy area. Some of the exercise programs that are supported by doctors and physical therapists include the Dia Method, the MuTu System and the Tupler Technique. These exercises for the abs are done in many positions, including: standing, laying down, on all fours or cross legged. Keeping a tall posture and sucking the belly muscles back towards the spine, the tight position is held for several minutes. The hand is kept over the belly button to ensure that each breath tightens more and does not release the muscles. The actual separation can be felt to close after days of this 10 minute exercise and many women lose inches from their waistline. Classes run 12 weeks and this kind of muscle conditioning is supported by many OB-GYN doctors for during or after pregnancy.

When is it time for a good fall snack mix?? Anytime! In truth, it’s probably better in the fall, but I’d take it year-round if I could. The key to good snack/trail mix in this house is the special touches. When I was 7 months pregnant with Scarlet, we went to the bed & breakfast in Maine at which we had met, and celebrated our one year anniversary. I remember staying up late with our Innkeeper friend, and watching her make delicious trail mix blends for her kids, for her grandkids, for the Inn guests, and for us. She had so many special touches, and a unique way of making the snack mixes extra special. I use that method now to make fall snack mix for my family. I bought an extra special ingredient at Shop-Rite last week and my kids were so happy! Remember Oreo O’s from your childhood? I do too! And my dreams came true to see it in the cereal aisle alongside Honey Maid S’mores. YUM. It’s just like I remember, but better!! I’m talking chocolatey, crunchy O’s with that OREO® cookie taste you know and love. There’s a rich creme coating to give you a … Continue reading

Look to the fall 2017 fashion shows and you’ll find the models are not just stomping down the runway in amazing clothes, but also in killer nails. Some of the fall nail art styles are out of this world and really only practical in the realm of high-end fashion (like scary long claws) but most of the trends are wearable for everyday fashion and even the envelope-pushing styles can be adapted for the real world. Fashion-Forward Fall Manicure If you are ready to go full fashion-forward with your fall manicure, go bold with bling. Draw inspiration from the 70s and get a manicure with metallic nail polish and glittery disco ball appliques. To wear this trend toned down, ask for the appliques on a single accent nail on each hand. Bold 70s colors are also on trend. Ask for rainbow color block tips, and if you really want your nails to make a statement, add tassels, feathers or beads. Office-Friendly Fall Manicure Some jobs aren’t going to let tassels and rainbow colors fly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace the latest looks for an office-friendly fall manicure. In fact, nudes and neutrals are right on trend this season. To punch up your manicure with some work-appropriate nail art, ask for a black or glitter outline around a neutral base. If you love a French mani, go for black or neutral gray tips instead of white. And if your job is OK with a little sparkle, a smattering of gemstone appliques just below the cuticles instead of at the tips is what’s new and hot for fall. Short Nail Styles Since short nails have less real estate available for nail art, choose styles that provide an elongated look. Just as pinstripe pants help short women appear taller, the trend of a single vertical line in the middle of each nail gives the appearance of length. Long triangles create the same effect and can tie into the color block trend. When blank space is left between the lines, horizontal and chevron stripes look fabulous on short nails. If you have extra short nails, instead of filling the space with art, ask the nail technician to paint each nail in a slightly different shade from the same color family for a cool ombre effect.

Thick hair is the envy of women who don’t have it, but often the bane of those who do. These difficult tresses often end up being worn in a ponytail just because the owner doesn’t know how else to cope. If that’s you, never fear: with the right haircut, your mane can become a lot more versatile. If your hair often seems like a wild animal you just can’t tame, let’s talk a few strategies to transform it into the smooth, fun locks you’ve been waiting for. Bangs Bangs do wonders for thick hair. For one thing, they frame your face better, so that instead of two huge curtains on either side, you have a style that wraps around more. This is perfect for oval or square faces that tend to look stretched out with just a middle part and hair on either side. Plus, when you cut bangs, you remove a significant amount from the overall mass, so they pull double duty. Layering Layering is the classic technique to make thick hair more manageable. Whether you’re going for a shoulder-length style or a mid-back coiffure, layers can take some of that square heaviness out of especially thick or coarse hair. Long Length When you have thick hair, length is your friend. While it’s tempting to chop in response to the frustrating weight, don’t do it. Long hair performs many services for you. It weighs down troublesome curls, gives your hair a smoother shape (no one likes the blunt thick-hair triangle bob, right?) and pulls annoying body out for a sleeker look overall. Thinning If longer length and layering aren’t enough to weigh hair down and calm that body, try thinning shears. These are specially made to cut right through sections of hair to thin it without creating the chopping look that happens when you try to thin with regular scissors. Don’t spend any more time hating on your thick hair. Instead, ring your stylist, explain what you need and make an appointment. They can tailor the plan even more carefully to your hair type and needs, and before you know it, you’ll love your locks again.

As seen on the runways, fall 2017 makeup looks are bold, colorful and rebellious. Fall makeup is freeing with no strict set of in or out colors. While shimmery metallics, jewel tones and dark berries painted models’ faces, so did 70s-inspired bright oranges, blues, yellows and greens. Channel your inner child – playing with makeup and coloring outside the lines – and mix in some fashion savvy for head-turning beauty. Colorful Fall Eye Shadows Color-blocking is not just for that slimming dress. The top designers embraced color-block eye shadow to varying degrees. Oscar de la Renta kept it subtle with a line of fuchsia surrounded by violet while Emilio de la Morena went for it with thick lines of orange, blue and white. If you want to dip your toes into the trend before diving in, wear a smudge of crimson in the middle of a smokey eye. Also, anything that glitters under the lights of Studio 54 is en vogue again. Sparkle with metallic golds, silvers, bronzes and colorful jewel tones. With these colors, you can delicately line the whole eyes or use shadow sticks to create long wingtips or block smudges under the eyes. Dramatic Eyeliner Art Be bold, brave beauty. Dramatic cat eyes, thick wingtips and skinny lines just below the eyebrows are all part of fall’s eyeliner art. If you’ve ever wanted to embrace your dark side, take a page from Versace’s book with thick, villainous eyeliner that tips up to the outside corners of the brows. To balance such a heavy look, draw a single liquid line on the lower lid. Spider lashes have also crept into the season. Reminiscent of Twiggy’s signature style, this trend uses liner to draw long lower lashes. Balance the look with nude lips, soft shadow and minimal top lashes. Luscious Fall Lips You know that look after a make-out sesh? Smudged lipstick that lets everyone know what you’ve been up to? That’s the sexy look for fall, as seen on models for Giambattista Valli, Gypsy Sport, and Rosie Assoulin. Try the look in a red or berry using either a matte or gloss. Dark, gothic lips created with matte berries, crimsons and browns are also on trend. Purple and blue lips are the most fashion-forward fall looks.

Braids are a time-honored hairstyle that women have worn to commemorate every occasion under the sun, from weddings to first dates, school celebrations to spiritual events. If you’re looking for a gorgeous braided ‘do for your next to-do, one of these choices might just work for you. 1. Accent Braids Small braids scattered throughout the hair lend an elfin look to any outfit. Whether you opt for tiny braids framing the face and buried in the hair, or larger side braids on either side of the head, both are perfect for long, loose locks. 2. Braids to a Half-Pony Braids are beautiful worn down around the face, but they make an equally sleek statement pulled straight up to the back of the head in a half-pony. This style works particularly well for natural hair, although straighter hair also looks lovely when half of it is bound into small braids and pulled up, and the rest worn loose around the shoulders. 3. Crown of Braids The crown of braids is an age-old style, appropriate to queens and commoners alike. For those who don’t have quite enough hair mass for this ‘do, a set of clip-in extensions dyed to match do the trick nicely. 4. Daenerys Targaryen Braids The Mother of Dragons always has a fantastic hairstyle, no matter how many battles she goes through. Grab her look with multiple layers of braids, each pair gathered at the back and flowing down into the one below, like this. 5. Dressy Fishtail The mermaid-like perfect of fishtail braids is well known to beach girls everywhere. What more perfect way to sweep back your tresses? For a dressier take on the fishtail, start a smaller fishtail braid at the crown, then blend it into the larger version below. Or in hair at the nape of the neck with a statement clasp before beginning the style. Once you’ve chosen your poison – sorry, your braid – it’s time to get some professional help. Make sure to book your salon appointment several weeks before the big day. If it’s for a dance or wedding in your town, make sure you book it out even further to make sure a rush doesn’t make getting an appointment impossible. Bring pictures the day of so you can show your stylist, which will ensure the best results.

One of the most frequently requested day spa services is a facial. Even if you’ve had a facial treatment in the past, you may still have some questions about the various kinds of available facials. What are Facials For? Facials can offer several skin care benefits, including relaxation, improved skin circulation, cell sloughing and rejuvenation, moisturizer, and an overall improved skin condition. The specific benefits of a facial treatments depend on the ingredients as well as any additional manual techniques, such as massage, used to administer the facial. Repêchage Four Layer Facial This facial treatment has been featured in Vogue Magazine and other periodicals, and is widely considered to be the most advanced anti-aging facial. It involves using a Vitamin C cleanser, a proprietary seaweed formulation, glycolic acid, and a Vitamin B formula. It’s finished with European massage. Classic European Facial This facial treatment includes gentle cleansing to remove makeup and dirt, a skin analysis, and some light pore extraction if needed. The skin is then exfoliated with a scrub, followed by a massage. A mask may be applied with ingredients such as cooling cucumber, after which the skin is cleansed again and hydrated with a moisturizer. The facial often finishes with a layer of UV protection in the form of a mist or lotion. Acne Facial Acne facials are good for skin that is prone to breakouts. Since this type of skin is typical of younger people, it involves more rigorous treatment and ingredients than a classic face treatment. Acne facials will usually start with a steam and deep cleansing, followed by extensive pore extraction. Formulations containing enzymes and glycolic acid are used in turn to improve and balance skin’s natural oils. An anti-bacterial mask or cream will then be applied, followed by a toner. After A Facial Your skin will feel smooth and refreshed after a facial treatment. There will typically be enhanced rosiness due to the elevated circulation. Some people will experience a breakout or two, since toxins are released during facials. Follow your day spa aesthetician’s instructions for follow up care of your skin after your facial. This may include things like avoiding sun and makeup for 24 hours. Spas often offer specialized or variations of classic facial treatments. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different kinds of facials, as this can renew tired skin and provide a variety of helpful nutrients. Ask your day spa aesthetician for recommendations the next time you visit.

Blackheads, zits, pimples… they are the worst nightmare of any teen on the eve of prom, or a bride nearing her wedding and are a nuisance to anyone who wishes for clean, flawless skin. If you are like most, your go-to treatment for this common, yet pesky skin problem is to pop it. Turns out, according to Sandra Lee, a dermatologist more commonly referred to as “Dr. Pimple Popper” and other skin experts featured on Allure, this is the last thing you should do to remedy the problem at least not in the traditional way. Read below to learn more about what you “shouldn’t” do to get rid of blackheads: 1. Don’t Pop Them Too Early We just mentioned that you shouldn’t pop a blackhead at will. Dr. Lee says her mantra is “Know when you pop and know when you stop.” The good doctor explains that popping a blackhead at the wrong time can lead to all kinds of issues, perhaps the most severe being scarring. This is, of course, the last thing you want. Therefore, in order to ensure you do the least damage possible, you need to wait until the pimple has a head. In other words, when it’s still a red zit situated deep under your skin, don’t force it up. You can apply warm compresses to move the process along though. 2. Don’t Use Your Fingers Saying “don’t pop zits” is something most dermatologists say but know you and everyone else will likely ignore. Therefore, since Dr. Lee knows popping will happen, she recommends you use a tool, not your fingers to complete the task. This will prevent infection from your fingernails and also will reduce the trauma on the surrounding skin. One tool she recommends is a comedone extractor. Use it by rotating it around the blackhead, pushing around it, not on the blackhead itself. 3. Don’t Keep Messing With it It is just human nature to mess with a zit, even after it’s been popped. Dr. Lee says this is a big no, no. Instead, once you have popped the pimple, treat it will any antibiotic cream, peroxide or topical acne treatment and then leave it alone. If you keep touching it, the risk of infection to the area and eventual scarring increases. Remember, the less you touch it, the quicker it will calm down, the redness will go away and you will begin to look like your amazingly beautiful self once again.

Packed with protein, calcium and probiotics, yogurt is undeniably beneficial to your health. Yet if you’re eating it on a daily basis (at breakfast with granola, on top of a potato as a sour cream alternative, to thicken a smoothie…), even the once-novel Greek types may have lost their “wow” factor. Fortunately, Icelandic yogurt is one of the next big things in the health food world, and is even lower in calories than its Greek counterpart! Need even more alternatives, especially if lactose is an issue? If you haven’t tried kefir, now’s the time. Skyr Technically, the dairy product known as skyr is considered a cheese in Iceland. Yet it’s so similar to thick, Greek-style yogurt that in the U.S., you’ll find it flavored and marketed as yogurt. Like the Greek types, skyr is much thicker and creamier than traditional versions. And as with many yogurts you can find in your supermarkets, skyr is high in calcium and protein, as well as probiotics. But skyr has the edge when it comes to taste, according to its fans. Although the Icelandic product is lower in sugar, it is sweeter-flavored. The skim milk-based yogurt is also lower in calories overall — about 50 fewer calories than comparable yogurt versions — and lower in sodium. Kefir Like yogurt, kefir is a fermented milk product that contains the prebiotics and probiotics considered to be useful for digestive health and to boost immunity, while helping to control blood sugar and cholesterol. Unlike yogurt, however, kefir is liquid. This difference gives you a little more versatility — and even portability — in your diet. Choose flavored kefir on its own as a thick, satisfying drink, or as the liquid base to a smoothie containing other nutritious ingredients. In addition, the pourable nature of kefir allows the plain varieties to be added to your diet in new ways, including in tangy cucumber salad dressings, or as a substitute for milk in desserts, muffins and pancakes. Looking for Vegan Alternatives? You may have to hunt a little harder, but both skyr and kefir, as well as “American” yogurts, have non-dairy alternatives. These fermented products can be made from any kind of “milk,” including almond, soy and rice.

There’s no doubt that an obesity epidemic is sweeping America. While some people are just “born thin,” many of us have to work like crazy to get the pounds off and keep them off. Yesterday, we discussed a few nutritional supplements that, when combined with regular exercise and responsible eating habits, can supercharge your body and help you to lose those stubborn pounds. Keep reading for 3 more common supplements that will help you to melt off the fat.
- This one is a mouthful, but have you ever heard of monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFA’s? Simply put, this is a kind of fat that’s found in plentiful amounts in foods like peanut butter, seeds, chocolate, avocados, nuts, and olive oil. Researchers have found that, when 20% of the calories from a person’s daily diet comes from MUFA’s over a long term period of time, a small but significant uptick takes place in fat burning and calorie burning. These foods also keep your appetite down and maintain your blood sugar levels.
- Conjugated linoleic acids are found in dairy products along with calcium and vitamin D. These acids help to push glucose into your cells and stimulate fat burning. CLA’s won’t create a massive amount of fat burning, but when you eat them regularly in conjunction with the other supplements, it can nudge the efficiency of your metabolism in a stronger direction.
- Green tea is packed with polyphenols, an antioxidant which is your metabolism’s best friend. Researchers have found that in can jack your resting metabolic rate by as much as 17%. The warm feeling you get when you drink green tea is caused by your body heating up and burning calories as heat. A cup of green tea is not only perfect for a cold day, but it’s a perfect appetite suppressant.

How does diet interplay with your overall physiology and well being? The human body is a complex web of chemical reactions working together, and each substance we ingest has an effect on our internal environment. Food has an indirect but strong effect of influencing how we feel. Though there is no absolute diet, since everyone’s physiology varies, there are ways to improve your mood through diet. Attaining Better Clarity and Focus To attain more clarity and focus, you could simply eat less. This would divert some of the energy expended in digesting food to the brain. With this technique, you wouldn’t eat wheat, gluten, and sugar, because it destabilizes blood sugar levels, is cost intensive to digest, and causes you to feel sleepy. If you fasted and ate only one meal a day and followed these protocols you might be more alert and aware. What Would Be A Good Diet For Someone Who Is Suffering From Depression? If you’re just having a bad day, one of the most common things people will do is go for cookies or carbs, especially if you’re feeling sad. This works temporarily, but if you suffer from depression or anxiety that’s caused by hormonal imbalances, things get a lot more complicated. If you suffer from low moods, avoid alcohol. Since alcohol is a natural depressant, it will ultimately only make the anxiety or depression worsen. The best solution is to consult your physician to determine the root cause of your depression. What Is An Overall Good Diet For Overall Mood And Well-Being? Eat moderately, and eat whole foods. Avoid foods that contain preservatives and any sort of processed foods. You don’t really need to spend an exorbitant amount of money on nutritional supplements, as many of them tend to not be absorbed into your system. Calorie Control Try to stay within a safe body fat percentage. A low body fat level will help you feel more confident about the way you look, which in turn will help your overall mood. How Much Influence Does Diet Have On Our Well Being? In the end, if you’re feeling a certain way the food you eat can subtly offer a lift. Healthy eating habits are a great foundation for a positive life, and can contribute to a good, well-adjusted attitude, Stay strong and good luck on your health journey!

Sometimes “powering through” can make you feel better when you’re sick. On the other hand, serious infections or breathing conditions make waiting it out a better strategy. The key is evaluating your symptoms. The Dilemma With common colds or sinus headaches, working out is generally fine, and even helpful. Because vigorous exercise opens nasal passages, pain and pressure are reduced, as is nasal congestion. On the other hand, a sinus infection (as opposed to clogged sinuses) can be worsened by contact with outdoor allergens. In addition, mild asthma and bronchitis flare-ups might be aggravated by excess activity, because the increased oxygen you get through cardio causes your bronchial tubes to narrow. Evaluating Your Symptoms Of course, when in doubt it’s always best to check with your doctor before working out. In general, however, determining if exercise is a good idea — especially if you’re prone to a wide range of allergic and bronchial issues — can often be determined by the nature of any pain or pressure. One method doctors often describe as the “neck check” can help. If your breathing problems seem to be centered in your lungs rather than your nasal cavities — in other words, the problem is below your neck — working out may worsen the symptoms. In contrast, allergic reactions that are giving you headaches, runny eyes or stuffy nose — i.e., “above the neck” — typically means that working out is fine. The exception to the neck rule comes with sinusitis. Exposing yourself to more allergens during a sinus infection can worsen the sinus allergy. Thick nasal discharge that is discolored is one way to distinguish sinus pain or a cold from actual sinusitis. Possible Solutions Even with a bronchial flare-up or sinusitis, compromises may allow you to get in a workout with exacerbating your condition. Swimming indoors often prevent “below the neck” issues from worsening, because the moist air you’re taking in is less aggravating to your airwaves. Controlling your environment can also help when you have a sinus infection. With fewer outdoor allergens to get to you as you’re exercising, your less likely to suffer from a histamine overreaction. On the other hand, if interior dust or mold is the issue, experiment with outdoor workouts.

If you’re tired of dealing with tangled locks and humidity frizz, and sick of spending an hour perfecting your hairdo only to have it explode when you step outside, it’s time for a keratin treatment. While your aesthetician will do the heavy lifting when it comes to the treatment, though you must do your part by preparing for it correctly ahead of time. If you want the best chance of a good result, here’s what to do. Deep Condition the Week Before You want your hair to be as natural as possible before the treatment, but have a solid base from which to work. That means sealed cuticles and healthy strands. You can protect your hair by doing a deep condition the week before your treatment. This doesn’t mean buying a fancy DIY treatment from the store, but rather steaming your hair for 10 minutes in the shower before conditioning, then letting it sit for 10 minutes for rinsing out. Avoid Harsh Treatments in the Week Leading Up In the week leading up to your treatment, avoid harsh stripping shampoos. Shampoos labeled “clarifying” should also be avoided, since those perform the same stripping action, even if they are less harsh and don’t create the same “squeaky clean” effect. You should also hold off on any home remedies you may perform, such as vinegar soaks to remove buildup – and should probably talk to a salon professional before using these remedies in the first place. Avoid Conditioners Two Days Before Avoid conditioners two days before your treatment, as they may block the keratin treatment somewhat and make it less effective. You should also steer clear of oils of any kind, and any heavy products that build up on your hair, such as wax. The goal is to keep hair as natural as possible right up until the moment the treatment is performed. If you follow these steps in the days leading up to your treatment, you will love the results. Get ready for smooth, frizz-free hair all year round.

If you’ve decided to dye your hair, chances are you’d like it to look as natural as possible … assuming you’re not going for candy pink, that is. Even then, there are a few rules of the road when it comes to choosing a color that will work for you. Follow these steps, and you’re much likelier to walk away from the salon without regret. Match Yourself to a Celebrity The A-listers know what they’re doing. Not only do they dye their hair like it’s their job (oh wait, it is), they have the best aestheticians in the industry to help them do it. You can start by looking through pictures of your favorite actors and actresses to find the colors you like. Understand Your Skin Tone: Warm or Cool? Once you have a clearer idea of the hue you’re looking for, it’s time to do a little skin tone research. Hold a piece of white printer paper up to your face and check out your skin. If it looks yellow, you have a warm complexion. If it’s rosy or bluish, you have a cool complexion. If it looks gray, your complexion is neutral. Pick the Opposite Temperature Now it’s time to pick the color, which should be in the opposite direction on the temperature scale. If you have warm skin, go for a cool tone – ice blond, bluish-black or reds with a lot of purple in them. Cooler skin tones do well with rich hues such as honey or espresso. If you have a neutral complexion, the world is your oyster! Get a Professional Makeup Artist’s Advice Last but not least, always ask a stylist for advice before coloring your hair, then set up an appointment to have it done professionally. Many people will need to bleach their hair before adding color, and that’s not something you want to do at home. Plus, your stylist can warn you away from any colors that might not suit. That’s all, folks! Your brief mini-guide to complexion-friendly hair color. Make sure you whip this out next time you’re considering switching hue.

If you’re reading this, perhaps you’re getting ready to become a new parent. If so, congratulations! Maybe you’re wondering what newborn baby products you’ll need, so that when you bring your newborn home from the hospital, you’ll be ready to go. First time parents frequently have massive baby registries, and you might be surprised by how little you actually need.
Keep reading to learn the basics of what you should have for your baby.
- New parents and well-meaning friends and family frequently go nuts when it comes to newborn baby clothing. We get it, it can be irresistable to get newborn designer outfits. It can also be a huge waste of money. Babies grow quickly, and they grow out of outfits fast. A good rule of thumb is for 80% of your newbor’s clothing to be used, and 20% new for special outings. Look online, ask friends who have kids, and you’ll be able to find huge amounts of newborn clothes for very little money.
- Speaking of clothing and sleepers, sometimes parents-to-be are leery of used clothes, especially if there are stains on it. Trust us when we tell you, babies stain everything in all kinds of ways. If you can save some big money by accepting a stained jumper or sleeper, go for it.
- While it’s okay to pick up a couple of pieces ahead of time, a smart decision is to wait until you know the birth weight of your baby before embarking on a shopping spree. Otherwise, you run the risk of sizes that either don’t fit at all, or are only useable for a few days.

When is the last time you thought about the way you use your hair conditioner? If you’re like most people, it was probably not long after you graduated from using “No More Tears.” Once you read the directions on the back of a bottle of hair conditioner the first few times, you’re all set, right? After all, it’s not rocket science. You put a dime-sized dollop in your hand, slather it on, rinse, and go. Not so fast. Here are the issues that can arise when you misuse hair conditioner, as well as the right way to do it. You’re Using Too Much Over time, that dime-sized dollop has ballooned into a quarter-sized dollop or maybe even a half-dollar size. In the case of hair conditioner, a little goes a long way. Unless you’re rocking Rapunzel locks, it’s likely that you really need to dial back the amount of conditioner you’re piling on your head in the shower. When you use too much conditioner, what happens is that you end up coating your hair strands, and it’s much harder to rinse out. Ultimately, the conditioner ends up attracting debris from the environment, making your hair dirtier, sooner. Then you have to wash it more often to get rid of the debris, use too much conditioner again, and the vicious cycle continues. Ever wonder why your hair gets so dirty? The conditioner might be too blame if you’re using too much of it. You’re Blocking Your Hair Follicles Your hair grows out of follicles that are similar to the pores in your skin. These follicles need nourishment and oxygen in order to retain healthy function. The problem happens when you slather on all that conditioner into your scalp and fail to rinse it all off. The hair follicles are literally smothered beneath the viscous layer of conditioner. They get blocked and stop functioning properly. This can result in thinning hair, hair fallout or hair that just doesn’t seem to grow as fast as it should. The Right Way to Use Hair Conditioner First, use less of it. Dispense only a dime-sized dollop and rub it between your palms. Run your hands gently down your hair strands, starting from about midway down. Your objective is to condition the ends, not the scalp. Let the conditioner get absorbed for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. Hair conditioner can be really beneficial, but only when you’re using it the right way, and not using too much, or coating your scalp with it. After just a few times of adjusting the way you use it, you’ll notice improvement.

Suffering for beauty is not a new thing. For centuries women have been doing terrible things to their skin and bodies all in the name of beauty. While it is widely believed that many of these beauty trends are no longer in practice, there are still some that are rather alarming. Are you partaking in any of these dangerous skincare trends? Mercury in Your Skin Cream Bottom line here, beware when purchasing skincare products from import stores. The FDA identified a lengthy list of products from these sources that included mercury. Most of these are skin lightening creams, but a few had other purposes. Before purchasing, check the label for mercury but be aware that it can also be listed under other names including calomel, mercurio, mercurous chloride, or mercuric. Mineral Makeup Mineral makeup is usually considered to be a more natural, better makeup that is better for your skin, but an ingredient in some brands cause concerns. Mica and several other minerals are common ingredients which aren’t bad, but it’s particles can become airborne and inhaled, resulting in lung damage. On construction sites, workers who use products like Spackle that contain mica wear masks to avoid breathing in the particles. While there are no formal warnings yet, it is worth keep an eye on the ingredients list and how you use the product. Arsenic as an Impurity of some Skincare Ingredients Arsenic is a toxic carcinogen linked to cancer and other serious health issues. It’s something you don’t want near you, but it could be lurking in your skincare products as an impurity of other ingredients. The ingredients hydrogenated cottonseed glyceride, polyvinyl acetate, hydrogenated cotton seed oil, octenylsuccinate, and aluminum starch may contain arsenic as an impurity. Failure to Read the Labels on Your Beauty Products Did you know that you absorb as much as 60 percent of what you put on your skin? It’s true and what you don’t know could make you very sick and even kill you. Benzoyl peroxide, FD&C color and pigments, sodium lauryl sulfate and other toxic substances may be lurking in your beauty products and you won’t even know it if you don’t read labels. This infographic provides a great list of toxic compounds found in beauty products.

Fitness videos are great when it comes to guidance, but they keep you stuck indoors. The latest audio versions, however, allow you to grab your phone and head out to your favorite park or beach. You’ll still get instruction and music — but with fresh air and a view! Burning Out on Fitness TV? Whether you’ve been working out to YouTube videos or DVDs, there’s no question that being able to visually confirm how certain moves are done can be helpful. But having to be near a screen to do your routine also mean that you’ll often have to contend with the distractions of family members or annoying gym “rats.” And even if you opt for viewing the videos on something more portable, like your tablet, the limitations can be frustrating for cardio routines. After all, you can’t exactly stay in the zone when you need to keep your eye on the screen at all times. On the Go An audible workout app, on the other hand, allows you to simply grab your phone and go. The subscription system works especially well for cardio, in which you don’t need to study a complicated yoga move or modified plank. Instead, you can run around your neighborhood, hit the beach or just climb on the treadmill, knowing you let your imagination take you somewhere other than a tiny screen. With audio workouts, it’s as if you have your own personal teacher telling you when to ramp up the running intensity, when to work in some squats, and when it’s time to cool down. Along the way, you’ll have music to keep things pumping or to cool things down, along with an expert’s voice to guide you through it. How it Works A good audio workout app like Daily Spot or Aaptiv will allow you a free trial for several days, after which you can choose to subscribe for about $10 a month. Once you have the app, you can choose whatever workout suits you for the day. Sort offerings by intensity level, type of workout (walking, running, marathon training, cycling and more), or by a preferred trainer. New workouts are uploaded every day, so you’ll never run out of options!

Whether you want your nails to look beautiful because your class reunion is coming up, your best friend is getting married or you are heading out of town to meet a long-lost relative, professional nail technicians have the tools, experience and skills necessary to give you the gorgeous, natural-looking nails you desire. Choosing an Artificial Nail Material For the most part, nail technicians use acrylic, gel and silk to create artificial nails. The material that is best for you depends on a number of factors. For example, if you want to commit to wearing your artificial nails for an extended period, you should consider acrylic or gel nails. However, if you are not necessarily interested in lengthening your nails, but you want to repair your nail(s) or strengthen your nail tips, you should choose silk. Acrylic Nail Application First, your nail technician will ‘rough up’ your natural nail: This helps ensure that the acrylic adheres closely to your nail. As your technician creates your artificial nails, he or she will mix together a powder and a liquid. This mixture is then brushed onto your fingernails. Generally, your entire nail will be covered; however, there are times when a flexible form is used to assist with sculpting your nail extensions. Furthermore, your technician may decide to extend your nails by applying nail tips. As the acrylic mixture is exposed to the air, it hardens. Your technician can now shape your nail to your desired length and style. Maintenance As your nails grow, a small gap forms between your nail beds and the acrylic nails. Every two or three weeks you will visit your nail technician so he or she can fill in these gaps for you. Removal If you decide that you would like to have your acrylics removed, this can be accomplished quite easily. Your technician can remove your acrylic nails without prying or forcing them – both of which can cause damage to your natural nail. Gel Nails The gel used to create artificial nails is nothing like the thick gel products of years gone by. Today, the consistency of these gels resembles that of nail polish. Thus, allowing for a natural-looking result. Application If you want to extend the length of your nails, your nail technician will apply nail tips before he or she applies the gel. After each coat of gel is applied, you will place your hands beneath an ultraviolet light (UV) for a specific length of time (up to two minutes). The UV light allows the product to harden or “cure.” Maintenance Just like their acrylic counterpart, gels will grow out and filling in is required every few weeks. Removal For the most part, gel nails can be removed by immersing them in nail polish remover. However, not all gel nails can be removed in the manner; therefore, you must speak with your nail technician before attempting to remove your gel nails at home. Silk Wraps These wraps are designed to strengthen weak nails or assist a cracked nail as it grows out. Wraps may also be used to strengthen nail tips. Application Your technician fits the material to match the shape of your nail. The material is held in place while he or she brushes on the glue. The adhesives used to apply wraps lasts from two to three weeks. If your hands frequently come into contact with water, the glue may loosen sooner. After your silk wraps are applied, you should wear gloves when you wash dishes or perform any other task that requires you to submerge your hands for any length of time. If your wraps do come off, your technician can reapply or remove them at your next visit. Now that you know the difference between acrylic, gel and silk artificial nails, take the time to find an experienced nail technician in your area.

It is a potent natural antioxidant and can be used to increase your body’s natural immunity to infections and diseases - especially helpful during those cold winters, as well as being able to treat a number of other health related issues.

Catherine and I are out travelling the world these days and are experiencing customer service from the more modern venues. The shortcut language we have developed between ourselves usually results in a lifted eyebrow, immediately followed by guffaws of laughter as we recognize that we read the situation in the same manner. The Ideal Customer Experience If customer service is in the small things we do for our customers then let’s look at those small things individually, then add them up to that exceptional customer service experience: The greeting Introductions are important, so introduce yourself and then make sure you use their name at least five times while they are in the salon. It has been proven (boy, wouldn’t you love to do that research!) that it takes five times for the customer to feel like they belong to the salon. The consultation Whether it is for the first time or repeat client, a consultation is an important aspect of the customer service experience within the salon. There should be a specific formula for first time clients and a follow-up consultation with each visit afterwards. The service Make it about them, their hair, their fashion, their color, their world! Presenting retail; an extension of the service you offer in the salon. Make sure that your clients go home with product to enhance their salon experience. It also improves your chances of your client returning. Re-booking Take care of your client’s hair future. It is part of the customer service experience – they will be grateful! Check-out Graciousness and courtesy throughout! Smile, smile, smile Through the entire transaction; from greeting to check-out. Example Good Customer Service We were at a Starbuck’s last week and had the most wonderful server at the counter. A welcoming smile greeted us and an uplifted voice asked us for our order. After placing our requests she told us to find a seat and she would bring our order to us. When she arrived with our coffees she also had a sample of the freshest batch of muffins for us to try. Again, a lovely smile and a gracious attitude. We were both struck by the overall feeling of well-being; of being welcomed in a place of business. Here’s what intrigued us: her smile and welcoming attitude, method of introducing a new tea blend to us and the use of the word “experience” in describing a new product. She brought our coffee to us rather than make us wait at the counter where the barista makes it (you know as well as I do, they don’t normally do that!), and she brought us a sample of a new product to try. Each of these aspects seem small on their own, but put in a total package from the coffee shop perspective, this was exceptional customer service! It made me realize that exceptional customer service is in the small things we do for our clients. Improving your Customer Service What else can we do to bring an exceptional guest experience to our salon clients? We have a tendency to sometimes take our clients for granted. We have an established relationship with them so perhaps we stop seeing them as new and fresh when they come in to the salon on a regular basis. Ask for customer feedback Our first clue then is to take a step back when a client comes in to see us and see them as new again; kind of like an old love that we want to refresh and re-romance! Ask your client how they are doing! Put together a client feedback form and get the information straight from the horse’s mouth. Again, this will gather valuable information for you to analyze and make adjustments. Compare your business with competitors When was the last time you or your staff experienced a salon service in another salon? It is an important aspect of the customer service you offer to your own clients. Find out what services others in your area are offering to their clients. You may learn something new or you may come home happy with the level of service you are offering at your own salon. Bring in a mystery shopper Have you ever hired a mystery shopper to explore your customer service policies? Ask a friend from a community group, someone who hasn’t been a client of the salon; ask them to be your mystery shopper and give them a gift coupon for one of the services provided by your salon. After their visit give them a feedback form to fill out. The feedback questions should cover every aspect of their visit, from greeting to check-out. Cover all the areas discussed above. The information gleaned from the experience can guide you to service improvement or a super-duper pat on the back to your staff!! Put together a customer service policy Finally, it is important to establish a written customer service policy for the salon. Every aspect of our clients’ experiences needs to be in writing within your policy manual. That way your customer service policy is part of the systems you have developed for the salon. It will make your life simpler when the plan is laid out and in writing. Any questions your staff have on how to handle a client situation will be in an established policy for them to follow; takes some of the guess work out of the equation! So let’s get out there, romance our clients and watch our retention and re-booking figures grow in an upwardly motion!

Soaking in the warmth of the sun is relaxing when you’re sunbathing on the beach, but harmful UV rays can sprinkle your skin with spots and wrinkles. And if you’re fair-skinned, simply stepping outside without sunscreen can summon the sun’s wrath upon your face. Sun damage doesn’t have to leave a permanent mark. Thanks to the latest skincare treatments, clearer skin can be yours. And remember, prevention is key. Make applying sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher part of your morning routine. Your skin will thank you. Erase Sun Spots with Microdermabrasion How does exfoliating away sun spots sound? That’s essentially what microdermabrasion does. Microdermabrasion is the pain-free rejuvenation treatment anyone can try. An esthetician simply sprays tiny crystals onto your skin and then vacuums them up for a process that is more powerful than at-home methods while remaining gentle. By removing the outermost layer of skin, through a series of treatments, microdermabrasion can fade sun spots. Peel Away Sun Damage with Chemical Peels If you’ve never had a peel before, the idea of purposely injuring the skin with chemicals to remove layers and promote new growth might sound a little crazy. But medium-depth peels, like like trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and glycolic acid are perfectly safe and work wonders on wrinkles acne, and sun spots because they penetrate both the deeper layer of the epidermis and the superficial dermis of the skin. Depending on your skin type and the severity of your sun damage, you may need a series of peels to achieve ultimate results. Fight Spots and Wrinkles with Antioxidant Facials Enjoy some “me time” and treat yourself to an antioxidant rich facial. Antioxidants are not only are anti-aging fighters, but they also reduce sun damage on the skin. If wrinkles are your nemesis, ask for a facial rich in beta-carotene. Vitamins A (retinol) and vitamin C give a one-two punch to sun spots by reducing the pigmentation and brightening the skin. Vitamins work great in combination on the skin. According to the Journal of Dermato-Endocrinology, vitamins C, B3, and E do the best job at penetrating the skin through their small molecular weight.

All mascaras are not created equal. As you probably have already found out, there’s a huge difference between mascara formulations. If you don’t choose a good one, you could end up with, well, smudges, flakes, bare lashes, stains, lash imprints under your eyes and a lot worse. A bad mascara can not only ruin your day; it can make a horrible impression on the people you meet. So, you’ve turned to false lashes. Falsies definitely have their place. They are ideal for holiday parties, photo ops and situations where you need to attract attention to those gorgeous eyes of yours. But falsies can look out of place at work, backyard barbeques and weekend garage sale expeditions. How to get that lush look without falsies? Here are lush mascaras that outlash falsies. 1. Avon Mega Effects Mascara Avon isn’t the most luxurious brand out there, but they are certainly one of the oldest beauty brands in existence. They work hard to formulate the best beauty products for women, and their Avon Mega Effects Mascara hits it right on the nose. This mascara offers really noticeable lashes at a fraction of the cost of other luxury brands. 2. Cover Girl Clump Crusher Extensions Lash Blast Mascara The one huge, gigantic drawback of using this mascara is that it gives you such lush lashes that your friends will accuse you of wearing falsies. The resulting thick and long lashes after each and every use will make you rethink wearing falsies at all. 3. Estee Lauder More Than Mascara This lux brand delivers thick, long lashes in a matter of a few strokes. The brush wand is pretty unspectacular, so the formulation must be where all the magic resides. Promises that it won’t smudge, clump or flake are pretty solid as far as consumer responses have shown. This one is worth a try. Depending on your budget and preference, one of the above mentioned lash products are sure to provide you with the results you’re looking for. Time to put your falsies into storage!
