Watch Stolen Girlfriends Club set FQ a t-shirt style challenge

Stolen Girlfriends Club is renowned for its raucous NZFW shows — always built around rock ‘n’ roll collections with sex appeal to (thigh-high) boot. Here are some of the exhibitioners we are most excited to see at the show that we think you should see too 😋 Chocolate We are absolutely in love with the chilli hot chocolate Bohemein Chocolate does. Their sea salt caramels are absolutely divine as well! We’ve never tried anything from Honest Chocolat, so a nibble of the award-winning Salted Caramel and Buckwheat Bar is a must. Treats Bailey’s Fudge Kitchen will be presenting and sampling over 30 amazing fudge flavours throughout the show. And they’re all gluten-free! I’ve recently popped by the Fix and Fogg window on Eva Street while I was in Wellington. I have to say, I’m craving more of their delicious peanut butter 😍 Milse is my standard go-to place when I need a decadent treat so of course I’m so excited to see what they’re bringing to the show! The cabinets are all stocked and ready for your Saturday dessert adventures! 🍰 A post shared by Milse Dessert Bar & Patisserie (@milse_britomart) on Aug 11, 2017 at 8:12pm PDT Drinks You must have seen the beautiful pastel blue Storm and India tins around, but did you know the tins contained equally beautiful tea blends? Storm and India teas The photo of the pink beetroot latte from Urban Blends got us craving for some, so we have to grab some at the show! If you love smoothies and juices as much as we do, get some Caliwood straws. Say no to the boring plastic straw and pimp up your drink with their reusable stainless steel straws! If you haven’t gotten tickets, you can get them here! Now you know which stalls we’re hitting up first, what are YOU most excited to see?   #nzgirlhacks

#nzgirlhacks: 5 Common Food Traps For Your Health, From Dr Libby

by Lidya @ nzgirl

Spring cleaning your house and life? Why not spring clean your health with Dr Libby as well! Australasia’s leading nutritional biochemist Dr Libby tells us what the top 5 things people do that damage their attempts to be healthy. Plus, win tickets to see Dr Libby in real life and a copy of her best-selling book What Am I Supposed To Eat?. Just comment below which food trap you fall into the most!   Five common food traps that lead us away from good health 1. Inhaling your food So many people inhale their food these days, whether they’re eating on the run, in a rush to get back to their to-do list, or simply distracted (ever eaten an entire packet of crisps in front of the TV without even noticing?). We need to slow down and chew our food properly – there are no teeth beyond the mouth! Aside from breaking down our food, chewing sends a signal to the stomach that food is on its way, allowing it to prepare for optimal digestion. 2. Thinking you can burn off poor food choices No amount of exercise can burn off the effects of a poor-quality way of eating. I have met thousands of people who exercise frequently (and with intensity), especially after making poor food choices with the intention of ‘burning off’ the calories they consumed the day before. But the calorie equation (calories in versus calories burned) doesn’t take into account the biochemical and hormonal effects of our food choices. There is nothing in the world that can replace a highly nutritious way of eating. 3. Drinking water with meals For the most effective digestion, we need the pH of our stomach acid to sit at around 2. Water has a pH of 7 (neutral) or greater so drinking water with your meal has the potential to dilute the stomach acid. If the stomach isn’t acidic enough, you may not be able to extract all of the nutrients from your food optimally and you may also experience digestive symptoms such as bloating. Drink water between meals rather than with your meals. 4. Listening to external sources rather than your own body With so many nutrition experts sharing information and the rise of social media ‘influencers’, we are exposed to so many (often conflicting!) messages about what to eat and what not to eat. Experts play a role – of course. Yet, when you look for answers externally and take someone else’s well-meaning, but possibly inaccurate nutrition advice as gospel, you are essentially disregarding your own inner wisdom. I have seen this time and time again with people continuing to eat foods they have been told are “healthy”, despite their body sending them clear signals that these foods aren’t right for them. I’m not for a second denying that many people would benefit from nutrition education and guidance, but at the end of the day, know that your body is your best barometer when it comes to what best nourishes you. 5. Using unhelpful food language Food isn’t ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘healthy’, ‘unhealthy’ or ‘clean’. It is nutritious – or not. Humans are healthy, or they aren’t. And the more nutritious food we eat, the healthier we will be. When we talk about food in terms of nourishment, we look at what we’re getting from our food and how it’s feeding our cells. It’s an entirely different conversation and helps to establish a great relationship with food. Dr Libby just released her new book, What Am I Supposed to Eat? and is will be bringing her live event Food Frustration to 17 centres around New Zealand. Comment below which food trap you fall into the most and you might be one of 3 winners of a copy of What Am I Supposed to Eat? and a double passes to see Dr Libby LIVE! Winners will drawn September 16th so tell your friends! #nzgirlhacks

Hello. I didn't mean to interrupt your scrolling, I just wanted to say that you're beautiful. 💕 Today, feeling horrid and sick (I've even lost my voice), shortly after taking this picture (to show how I was feeling) I went to pick my little girl up from school. Out of the blue a young teenager I've never met walked past me and said: "wow, you're so pretty!" 😳That absolutely took me by surprise, not only because I was the furthest thing from pretty (I'm not being modest here, it's true), I was floored that someone I've never spoken to came to say a nice word, possibly with the intention of brightening someone's day at random (maybe she could see how miserable I was feeling). This sweet girl has inspired me and reminded me how a kind word can really make someone's day. #nzgirlhacks: Why You Need Life Insurance

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Saving money for your family means going over the expenses, your income, and every financial detail of your life with a fine-tooth comb. It’s not easy, and it’s probably going to cause you a little anxiety as you delve into places your money is going, how much you waste, and how much you need to save for the future. When you go over your expenses and decide it’s time to save money, don’t be like the thousands of people who assume they’re fine dropping their life insurance policies. It’s unwise, and financial experts advise against forgoing life insurance.   You Need Life Insurance You do need life insurance if you have a family. If something happens to you and your income is lost, can your family survive? If you are the primary breadwinner in the family, you must carry life insurance. Even if you don’t bring in any money for your family, you do provide a role. Do you have kids? If you stay home with them so your family doesn’t pay for school, daycare, after-school care, or babysitters while you work, you’re saving your family a lot of money every month. If something happened to you, who would care for your kids while your spouse is at work? Can your spouse afford to send your kids to school or daycare or camp while he or she works? You might not provide financial income to the family, but you do provide very important financial help to the family despite not receiving a paycheck every other week or so. Financial experts also remind consumers it’s not easy to get a good life insurance policy the older you good. If you decide to drop the policy you’ve carried for years, you’re never getting it back. The next one you get might be far more expensive, far less beneficial, and nothing like the one you have now. It’s easier to get good insurance for a good rate when you’re young and healthy. Are you still young and healthy? Think about that when you decide you’re saving money by ditching your life insurance policy. How to Save Money on Life Insurance If you really need to cut the bills in half or more, you need to consider a bundled policy. Get online or start making calls for car insurance quotes that also bundle your home and life insurance policies. Bundle discounts are available for those who choose to carry all their policies in the same place, and that’s a big saving each year. Additionally, if you make the decision to pay your premium upfront rather than monthly, you save a monthly fee as well as an automatic payment fee, and you get a discount for being a good customer. Talk to your insurance agent about the many ways you can save money on your insurance. Many of them are surprising, but that doesn’t mean they’re unwelcome. Savings are nice, and sometimes all you have to do is ask about it. You can compare insurance quotes until you find the policy that best fits your needs and your financial situation, and that’s how you save. You might find your current company is desperate to keep you, and they’ll offer more substantial discounts if they feel you might leave. Life insurance is the way your family survives when you are gone. It’s the kind of subject you never want to discuss, but it’s the kind of subject you must discuss. You can’t avoid this topic of conversation, and you certainly don’t want your family strapped financially and potentially change their entire lifestyle as they are dealing with losing you. Protect yourself and your family with a good life insurance policy. You need it, and your family needs it. It seems like a waste since you’re not really using it, but it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Don’t cancel it no matter how badly you need to save money.   #nzgirlhacks

How Hailwood’s 70s-era makeup look is actually totally current (and perfect for your next night out)

5 Reasons You Should Eat Kind This October (And Forever)

by Bridie @ nzgirl

In partnership with SAFE’s Eat Kind month in October Bridie Chetwin-Kelly our resident vegan talks us through the reasons why eating kind is awesome. More often than not people tend to think that being vegetarian or vegan is about eating tofu and kale and calling it a day. That’s not all you’re doing. Eating kind is about saving the environment, animals, your health and eating like you give a damn. 5 Reasons Why Eating Kind is Awesome  The health benefits People who eat kind are actually on to something when it comes to health. With the right diet and understanding what vital nutrients your body needs to survive, you could be the ideal picture of health. By removing animal products from diets, you are reducing your risk of having heart disease and cancer As for dairy, the lactose in milk can cause some serious discomfort and leafy greens, broccoli and beans are far better sources to get calcium. Save the planet, one plate at a time The numbers are in and a number of resources used to farm agriculture is completely destroying the planet. In the time it takes you to read this 4 football fields of a forest is being cleared for farming. Our clean green image in New Zealand is at risk of animal effluent making our water toxic and contaminated. Not to mention what effects farming releases large amounts of emissions and has a significant impact on climate change. You could save a life or a hundred Would you still be able to eat meat if slaughterhouses had windows? By going meat-free you could save over 96 animals a year or up to 198 animals a year if you go vegan.. Normalising eating cruelty-free is what Eat Kind is about and by removing the questions around it we can begin to accept it as a new normal. What’s the difference between a dog and a cow? It’s just plain pretty to eat plant-based Just look up vegan on Instagram and you will see just how beautiful the food looks. New Zealand has come a really long way with being vegetarian and vegan-friendly as well. If you are at a loss or think it’s going to be difficult to go out and eat, you couldn’t be more wrong. Thanks to Happycow.net you can look up your area and go to tried and tested restaurants and cafes. I can hand on heart say that I have been to countless vegan-friendly places across the entirety of New Zealand. Portershed in Christchurch, Botanist in Wellington and The Burgerie in Auckland are only a couple of examples!  The Burgerie also now boasts the best vegan burger in the whole of New Zealand. Check out @Veganeaaats and @Accidentallyvegannz for even more unbelievable vegan food! My office buddies sure know how to throw a send off with a (tasty) bang 💘🎉 Gorgeous #vegan raspberry and coconut cake from @thecaker for my goodbye morning tea. Those flowers tho 😱👏🏻 A post shared by @accidentallyvegannz on Jul 20, 2017 at 1:29pm PDT Education around this has been made easy The education around this hot issue has never been easier and a number of documentaries out there are ever growing. I recommend, Earthlings for a sombre and heart-breaking look into what and how animals are used and abused. Be warned, it will break you… Cowspiracy has been deemed the shocking film that environmental organisations don’t want you to see. It’s about what is actually going to be sustainable for our planet. Lastly, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood is about educating people on the topic of climate change with a big focus on agricultural farming and the pace in which humans consume meat. Bonus, you get to look at Leo for a full movie. SAFE is encouraging people to at the very least, give it a go for the month of October and has plenty of resources on their website to make the transition an easy one. Save the planet, save the animals and give compassionate eating a go. READ, WATCH, LISTEN

The Household Savings Dilemma: Why 15 Percent is the Magical Number

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Scraping away money for a vacation or orthodontic braces may be your immediate goals, but there are more important factors to consider as you move from decade to decade. Retirement is the time of life where you don’t want any financial worries. You’ve worked hard all of your life, and it’s time to enjoy the spoils. For a comfortable retirement, however, you’ll need to plan your savings well before your 60s or 70s. Get to know the trick to saving for a comfortable retirement by focusing on a 15-percent value. It makes a huge difference in your life.   Social-Security Downside   CNBC reports that every age bracket should have a certain savings amount based on your annual salary. This strategy may seem like a lot of money to have saved in just your 30s alone, but it’s crucial to be self-sufficient on a financial level. Social Security may offer about 40 percent of today’s seniors’ incomes, but that value can drop in the coming years. The 15-percent savings rule gives you a large enough savings to cover some fluctuations in the marketplace if government subsidies become an issue in the future.   The Medical-Insurance Game   When you retire, you won’t have an employer’s medical insurance anymore. You’ll rely on the federal government’s insurance while subsidizing it with your own policy. It’s not unusual to pay a large amount of medical bills during your retirement either. Thousands of dollars over the course of your golden years must be allocated to just basic care. If you have a chronic ailment, plan on spending even more money. The 15-percent rule creates some wiggle room in your retirement to be cared for as necessary. As you grow older, you don’t want to skimp on any medical procedures or appointments that will improve your quality of life.   Long-Term Care Concerns   Nursing homes and other long-term care facilities are understandably expensive, and they’re crucial to your well-being. Many people start with the 15-percent rule and increase it to 20 percent if they want to seek out more luxurious facilities in their retirement years. You might invest in a self directed IRA as a way to gain even more returns too. Because long-term care is a probability during retirement, it’s always better to save for it with the 15-percent rule and allocate the funds to other pursuits if you end up not using it. Being prepared is the goal with any savings plan.   Your Life Expectancy   Most retirement plans assume that you’ll be retired for about 20 years. This time frame used to be accurate, but people are living for a lot longer during retirement. It’s not unusual for one person to live into their 80s or 90s. Ideally, plan on a long life to age 100 so that the 15-percent rule works in harmony with your Social Security. You’ll have a comfortable retirement without the worry of running out of money. This concern shouldn’t define your golden years.   Look to Your Employer   You might be interested in the 15-percent rule, but it seems too difficult. Take a look at your retirement account as it pertains to your employer, reports the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America. Many employers match their employees’ savings percentages up to a certain value. If your employer matches to a 6-percent level, you should do the same. Your total savings for retirement ends up at 12 percent. This value is incredibly close to the 15-percent goal. Simply increase your savings amount by one percent each year until you hit the goal value. You’ll hardly notice the difference in your paycheck. According to Forbes, saving money with a conservative perspective is the best course of action. You won’t gain a lot of returns in just a few years, but decades of savings will give you a reasonable, interest rate of around 6 or 7 percent. Prioritize your retirement with the 15-percent rule so that your golden years are bountiful.

Driving Freedom: How to Save Money on That Next Car Purchase

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Buying a car is a major, financial commitment for most people. You might be driving a car that’s a decade old or more right now. It’s time for a change, but the purchasing process is intimidating. In today’s car industry, there are many options that make the purchasing process easier than ever. Learn some of the insider secrets to scoring a spectacular deal on the car of your dreams. Simple tips can drive the price downward in a matter of minutes.   Try Online Sales Walking onto a dealership’s lot isn’t necessary today when you have the Internet to supplement your purchasing process. Save money on your next car by looking for deals online. Many dealerships will list certain cars that have been on the lot for several months. They want to move their inventory so the price is incredibly low. Print out this sale or save it to your smartphone. Bring it to the dealership so that you can see the vehicle in person. Because the price is set at an incredibly low level, there’s very little haggling that’s necessary.   Consider an Alternative Color If you look at the cars on the road today, white and black vehicles tend to dominate the world. These popular colors are well-known to dealerships so they set the prices high as a result. Alternative colors, such as blue or brown, don’t move as quickly from the lot as the everyday hues. Dealerships are more willing to give you a deal on these vehicles so be open to the varied colors. Settle on a low price that only encourages you to drive a unique car.   Shop Late Car salespeople are constantly looking at the bottom line. There are sales goals for each weekday and month. Consider a visit to the dealer near the end of the day on the 31st of the month. Because the dealer wants to make a deal to finish off the month with a healthy profit, the salesperson is more open to negotiation. Ask if there are any promotions that sweeten the deal during negotiations too, such as floor mats, an e cigarette starter kit, or maybe an Ipad. Some of the most unusual requests become part of the final sale as closing time nears.   Skip the Superfluous Extras It’s a fact that dealers will try to sell you numerous extras as the final papers are being signed. Avoid the addition of extended warranties and sealants. They’re simply not cost effective in the long run. Your factory warranty covers most of the issues that you’ll face in the coming years. The factory paint job is also high quality so sealing it is only a cosmetic choice. Avoiding the extras will save hundreds of dollars at the signing table.   Get Pre-Approved A simple way to save money on a car is by beating them at their own financial game. Go to your bank and get pre-approved for a car loan. Be aware of the loan amount and interest rate. When it comes time to talk about financing, you have a starting point for the negotiations. In most cases, the dealership wants your financing business so they’ll match the pre-approved amount.   Avoid Monthly Payment Amounts As you haggle over the vehicle’s price, don’t discuss monthly payments. This tactic is a classic way to confuse the consumer. Discuss the car’s total price or drive-off amount. Negotiate off of this price so that there’s no confusion over costs. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for as a result of these negotiation tactics.   Always remember that you haven’t committed to any purchase until the documents are signed. Don’t feel obligated to complete a sale. If the process isn’t in your favor, you have every right to walk out of the door. Car salespeople will work on your psychology, but you don’t have to give in. You dictate the terms on your next purchase. Stay strong, and a good deal will present itself in time.

READ WATCH LISTEN: The Changeover Is The Perfect Coming-Of-Age Movie

by Lidya @ nzgirl

The best way I would describe The Changeover is a coming-of-age arthouse supernatural fantasy thriller-ish movie. A lot of words, but it is only because there are so many layers to the film. Sixteen year-old Laura Chant lives with her mother and four-year-old brother Jacko on the edge of earthquake-scarred Christchurch, New Zealand. Laura is drawn into a supernatural battle with an ancient spirit who attacks Jacko and slowly drains the life out of him. Laura discovers her true identity and the supernatural ability within her, and must harness it to save her brother's life. It captivated me straight from the start. The first scene (shown below) perfectly captured the awkwardness of wanting to be a carefree child but having the responsibilities of an adult. New Zealanders and co-producers Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie chose to set the movie in post-quake Christchurch. To me, post-quake Christchurch reflected what was going in in Laura’s world. She was trying to deal with the disaster of her father leaving and the responsibility of taking care of Jacko while trying to be a normal teenager. And of course, with teenagers, there has to be some sort of parental conflict. Melanie Lynskey plays Laura’s mum, an over-worked bookshop employee who often neglects her maternal duties. Tension between the mother-daughter duo reminded me of my arguments with my mother, with the similar lines of ‘Where were you? Who are you texting?’ and my old favourite line ‘You don’t listen to me’. Oh those angst years! Oh man. My goodness. I swear Timothy Spall just has a special talent for playing the creepy villain! There was the right amount of nail-biting and face covering and don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! The person next to me told me after the movie that she knew exactly when the jumps were coming by the number of times I cursed under my breath (which is hilarious!). But the movie can’t be classified as a horror film. The person on the other side of me was a 13 year old girl and she was not scared. At all. To be honest, I’m not great with horror/thrillers, but I would not suggest bring children under age 13 with you. Now let’s talk about romance, because there is major chemistry between Laura and Sorenson. Sorenson gave me a very strong vibe that reminded me of Edward from Twilight. Kinda awkward, wanting to help, slightly dark with a good heart. Of course, the physical similarities help too! If you have read the Carnegie-medal classic by Margaret Mahy that the film is based on, don’t expect it to be exactly the same. While the book hasn’t aged and still has relevant themes to modern life, the producers wanted to really appeal to teenagers now.  The Changeover will make you laugh, will definitely make you cry. It is a must-see. Out in cinemas September 28th in a cinema near you.
